Changing Display Settings

Some poorly designed software only works with certain monitor display settings. When a program specifies a screen resolution of 640x480 and 256 colors, it may be necessary to make adjustments to meet those specifications.
Making the adjustment is not difficult, and one can quickly become an expert at it. The following instructions should make the process pain-free.

  1. Right click on an empty area of the screen
  2. A menu should pop up. From that menu, choose (click on) Properties
  3. A new window, called Display Properties, should appear
  4. In Display Properties, click on the Settings tab (should be the right-most tab)
  5. There are two areas to check under Settings:
    1. Color (or Color Palette) will have a drop-down list of possible amounts of colors. From this drop down list choose 256.
    2. Resolution will have a slide-bar that should be adjusted (to the left) until the resolution is set for 640x480. There may also be a slide-bar for Desktop Area; it should also be set for 640x480.
  6. Once you have made the adjustments to Color and Resolution, click on the Apply button.
  7. You will usually have the option to "Apply settings without restarting". Make sure that option is selected and click Okay.
  8. The screen may flicker or black out, then come on again with the new settings and a box that asks if you want to keep the setting. Click on Yes.
  9. Occasionally, you may have to restart the system to keep the setting. (If you get a box that says something to that effect, then click on Restart)
  10. These instructions can also be followed to change the Color and Resolution back to higher settings. Most of the computers in the district are set for High Color or True Color, with a resolution of 800x600

Programs that usually need changes in display settings include, but are not limited to: The Living Books series, Magic Schoolbus series, and some Schoolhouse Rock titles.
