General Troubleshooting of Printers

Problem: When printing to a network printer, you send the print job and nothing happens
Diagnosis: Printer is never receiving the print job.
Solution 1: You are not logged on to the network. A quick way to check this is to double-click on the My Computer icon and see if nay network drives show up in the My Computer window (icons representing drives other than A and C, for instance).
If you are not logged on to the network, restart the computer and log on. You may want to clear out the print jobs first, though, (see below for instructions) as all of the print jobs stacked up waiting to print will start running once the computer can "see" the networked printer.
Solution 2: You don't have authorization to print to that particular printer. If you think this may be the case (a rare occurrence; it generally only happens when you are logged on at a school other than your home school) contact me about the problem.

Problem: Print quality is poor, print is light, print-out has gaps or blotches.
Diagnosis: Worn out print cartridge or toner.
Solution: Replace cartridge or toner.

Problem: No response from printer.
Diagnosis 1: Disconnected cable.
Solution: Check all cables and connections and make sure they are secure.
Diagnosis 2: Printer not On-line.
Solution: Make sure printer is on-line; sometimes there is a button that says "on-line". You can also try resetting it, if that is an option.

Problem: Document is sent to printer several times, but still doesn't print.
Recommendation: If you are in Windows 95, you may want to clear out the print queue before doing anything else. There should be a little printer icon on the Taskbar, near the clock. Double-click on the icon-a window with the list of print jobs will show up. Here you can check the status of the print jobs, and possibly discover the problem. You can also delete particular print jobs, or purge all of them. Sometimes, there may be a series of print jobs all jammed up behind one that is causing trouble for some reason. In that case, delete the first one in line, and see if that fixes the problem.
