Search Engines are utilities which maintain a fairly current catalogue of the
information available on the Internet. There are many search engines, and they are primarily differentiated
by three factors:
1) What they search for,
2) How they search for it,
3) How they present the
information they find.
Here you will see some of the major general and specialized search engines. The
general search engines look pretty much everywhere for information, while the specialized engines look in
specific areas. It is not really necessary to go into depth concerning how the information is gathered, beyond making the
statement that some search engines use methods more complete and efficient than others. The presentation of the
information is important for the individual user, as a person will tend to use whichever search engine
whose format is most appealing to them. As you use various search engines, you will see
the differences between each.
