SD104 families had the privilege of having the world-famous art collective, Lapzitola, come all the way from Oaxaca to create artwork for our Día de los Muertos workshop! Participants worked with stencils and “spray paint,” mimicking the artistic process Lapiztola uses to create art worldwide. They created their own Day of the Dead skull which was displayed at our annual Día de los Muertos celebration.
ABOUT LAPIZTOLA: The name of this urban art group, “Lapiztola,” explains their mission with a clever play on words: it combines lápiz, Spanish for “pencil,” and pistola, meaning “pistol,” to represent their commitment to using art as a creative weapon to spread political and social messages to the public. The three artists, Rosario, Roberto, and Yankel, use photography, digital media, and collage to create stencils for their murals and street art.
Nuestras familias del distrito escolar SD104 tuvo el privilegio de recibir al colectivo artístico de renombre mundial, Lapzitola, quien viajó desde Oaxaca para crear obras de arte para nuestro taller del Día de los Muertos. Los participantes trabajaron con plantillas y pintura en aerosol, imitando el proceso artístico que Lapzitola utiliza para crear arte en todo el mundo. Cada participante creó su propia calavera del Día de los Muertos, la cual se exhibió en nuestra celebración anual de esta festividad.
